Best Beaches to Visit Near Town Where Locals Swim, Walk & Relax

I’ve lived in Bolnuevo for over a decade, and when it comes to beach days, locals don’t just stick to one spot. Each playa around Puerto de Mazarrón has its own vibe from family friendly bays near the paseo marítimo to hidden rocky coves ideal for a quiet swim or sunset walk. Most residents have a personal favourite depending on the season, wind direction, or even the time of day. If you’re visiting, don’t just follow Google Maps the best spots aren’t always marked. Below are the beaches where you’ll actually find Mazarroneros spending their mornings, weekends, and summer evenings.

Where to Go for the Best Beach Day Real Spots Locals Recommend

I’ve lived in Bolnuevo long enough to call these beaches part of my daily life. Whether you’re here with kids, travelling as a couple, or just looking for that perfect spot to unwind, here’s where we actually go not just the places you see in tourist guides.

Playa del Rihuete | Easy Access, Family-Friendly, Right in Town

This is the main beach in Mazarrón, running alongside the paseo marítimo. It’s flat, safe, and ideal if you’ve got young kids or elderly parents in tow. There are lifeguards, clean public toilets, and chiringuitos right on the sand. You’ll even find a pharmacy just across the road handy if someone gets too much sun.

Playa de la Isla | Calm Waters and a Quieter Vibe

Just behind Club de Regatas, this beach stays calm thanks to a natural rock barrier great for paddleboarding and small kids. It’s quieter than the main beach and has a more laidback feel. Park uphill on Calle Noruega or near Calle Honduras. Skip the main access locals use the narrow shaded path down the hill.

Playa de Nares | Softer Sand and Local-Only Cafés

Ask anyone from Mazarrón town where they’d go to avoid the summer rush, and chances are they’ll say Nares. The slope into the water is gentle, and the beach itself is wide and clean great for toddlers to play safely. There are tiny cafés across from the pedestrian path not marked on Google Maps where you’ll find locals having tostadas and café con leche from as early as 8am. If you’re driving, look for a spot just off Avenida Doctor Meca before 10am. After that, it’s usually full.

Why Renting a Car Locally Matters Around Mazarrón

Here is where most first time visitors get caught off guard Puerto de Mazarrón may feel walkable, but that’s only true near the paseo marítimo and central promenade. Want to reach quieter beaches like Playa de Bahía, Playa Negra, or El Alamillo? They’re spread out. There’s no beach shuttle, and public transport is virtually non-existent between coves. Even taxis can be unreliable during peak summer. If you’re staying in places like a villa in Camposol, an Airbnb in Bolnuevo, or a beach flat in Isla Plana or La Azohía, having a car is honestly essential. We’ve helped hundreds of travellers rent cars locally here in Bolnuevo no queues, no upselling, no stress. Pick up your vehicle right near the beach and start driving within minutes.

Real Life Tips From Someone Who Lives Here

Always lock your car | even if you’re just grabbing towelsNever leave beach bags visible inside. It’s Spain. It’s safe. Still, why risk it?

Blue Zones | Paid Parking (you’ll see blue lines on the street) Buy a ticket at the machine, place it inside your windscreen

In July and August | get to the beach by 9:30–10:00 am for easy parking and bring shade if you’re using dirt car parks most have no trees at all

Getting Around Mazarrón’s Beaches Is Easier with a Car

If you’re planning to explore more than just Playa del Rihuete, having a car is a game-changer especially if you’re staying in Bolnuevo, La Azohía, Camposol, or any of the quieter areas outside the centre of Puerto de Mazarrón. With your own vehicle, you can reach lesser-known beaches like El Alamillo or Percheles early, skip the crowded taxi queues, and easily carry umbrellas, coolers, and paddleboards without hassle. Most Mazarroneros wouldn’t attempt a proper beach day let alone beach-hopping without a car. And frankly, neither should you.
